Girl Guides Learning : Girl Guide and Girl Scout Education Method

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) unique model of non-formal education, supporting the development of young people in diverse groups is called the Girl Guide and Girl Scout Method. This method creates a learning environment where young people can take the lead and make choices about what they do.

By using the method effectively Leaders will empower Youth Members and any program activity can be become:

We learn to:

Support each other, negotiate, make democratic decisions, assert our needs, solve problems together and take the lead.

What it looks like:

  1. Regular Patrol time
  2. Mix of ages
  3. Mentoring and support for new Youth Members
  4. Leadership opportunities for more experienced Youth Members

My path, my pace

We learn to:

Respect individuals, make our own choices learning in the best way for us, value our achievements, collaborate not compete and be confident.

What it looks like:

  1. Supportive mentoring between Adult Leader and each Girl Guide
  2. Encourage individual challenges and celebrate individual achievements
  3. Range of learning styles used
  4. Opportunities created to express individuality and share opinions

Learning by doing

We learn to:

Face challenges, learning through experience, take risks, make mistakes, get involved and pay attention.

What it looks like:

  1. Take part in challenges and problem-solving activities
  2. Reflection after activities to process the learning
  3. Encourage members to teach each other new skills

Connecting with others

We learn to:

Value others, appreciate diversity, listen, connect make a difference, develop empathy and communicate.

What it looks like:

  1. Mix of ages in Patrols
  2. Opportunities for every Girl Guide to develop their own leadership capabilities.
