This resource provides an overview of some key terms to related to the Girl Guides Australia Privacy Policy and the Australian privacy laws.
Access Request
A request made by an individual to access their own personal information held by an organisation.
Health information
Can be almost any information that is associated with an identifiable living individual’s health and wellbeing. It can include health records, genetic information, medication requirements, and wishes for future health services including organ donation.
Australian Privacy Principles
The Australia Privacy Principles or APPs are contained in Schedule 1 of the Privacy Act. There are 13 Australian Privacy Principles which are the cornerstone of the privacy protection framework in the Privacy Act. They govern standards, rights and obligations around privacy.
Implied Consent
Consent that is inferred from an individual’s actions or circumstances.
Australian Privacy Laws
Commonwealth legislation that covers the collection, use, holding and disclosure of personal information, being:
- the Privacy Act;
- any ancillary rules, guidelines, orders, directions, directives, codes of conduct, or other instruments made or issued under the Privacy Act; and
- the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
Personal Information
Can be almost any information that is associated with an identifiable living individual. It can include name, address, Health Information, correspondence, audio recordings, images, alpha numerical identifiers and combinations of these.
Collection Statement
A statement provided to individuals when collecting their personal, health or sensitive information, outlining the purpose of collection, how it will be used, and who it may be disclosed to
Privacy
The right of individuals to control their personal information and how it is collected, used, and shared.
Consent
Permission given by an individual.
Privacy Act
The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
Cross-border Data Transfer
The transfer of personal, health or sensitive information outside of the jurisdiction in which it was collected for example information being shared between an SGGO and GGA or from one SGGO to another.
Privacy Breach
Unauthorised access to, disclosure, or misuse of personal, health or sensitive information.
Data Breach
Personal, health or sensitive information is lost or subjected to unauthorised access, modification, disclosure, or other misuse or interference.
Privacy Complaint
A formal complaint made by an individual alleging a breach of their privacy rights.
De-identification
The process of removing or altering any identifying information from data to protect individuals’ privacy
Privacy Officer
A designated person within an organisation who is responsible for overseeing an organisation’s compliance with privacy laws and policies
Express Consent
Consent that is given explicitly, either verbally or in writing
Sensitive Information
Can be almost any information that is associated with an identifiable living individual’s opinions or beliefs. It can be race or ethnic information, religious beliefs, philosophical beliefs, sexual preferences and orientation, or criminal record.
