Girl Guides Learning : Responsibilities of Leaders and Managers working with Leaders in training

Responsibilities

When a leader in training starts in a unit and district she will immediately become part of your team and will start to work in that team. A very important part of being a part of this team will be the opportunities to work together to assist her learning and journey to qualification.

The Leadership Qualification Passport not only holds the tasks which a leader in training will complete but also a lot of information that will assist you in your role when working with a leader in training.

The first half of the Passport contains all the practical aspects of the role. The second half of the Passport contains tasks which will continue to build understanding of the role and responsibilities.

It is important to remember that a leader in training needs to demonstrate that she understands her responsibilities as a Leader and that she has understood how to carry them out. She is not expected to demonstrate the capability of an experienced leader nor to have carried out everything perfectly. In her Passport there are places to reflect on how each task was carried out and what she might do to improve, which is for her Mentor to discuss with her.

Listed below are the direct responsibilities for both the DM and the Leaders working with leaders in training. Your support, encouragement and understanding are the most valuable part of your role in taking the journey to qualification with a leader in training.

DISTRICT MANAGERS (or their representative) are responsible for

  • overseeing the learning journey through the Passport. There are areas where the DM will sign off tasks as they are completed and areas where either the Mentor or DM can sign. It would be valuable to look at the Passport to find the areas where you could assist in making sure there are opportunities for undertaking tasks for the leader in training
  • Completing the Induction to onboard a leader in training
  • Completing the ‘Check in With Your DM’ checklist and forwarding it to your State Office. These pages are also available separately on the GGA website
  • Liaise with the mentor regarding the Leadership Qualification and Appointment Form

UNIT LEADERS

  • It would be valuable to look at the Passport to find the areas where you could assist in making sure there are opportunities for undertaking tasks for the leader in training
  • Ensure that there is a unit meeting set aside in the program to deliver the unit program that was put together at her training by the leader in training and the patrol she was part of. Whilst this will not be a girl led program, it is invaluable for the leader in training to facilitate something she put together. She will gain experience in timing, flow of program and what engages girls
  • Sign off areas where it is marked. The tasks you sign off as a unit leader are ones that you will see her facilitating in the usual course of unit meetings
