Discussion starters and activities

The Promise and Law underpins everything we do as Guides: no matter what activity or challenge. Below are some ideas to begin discussions with the girls and some activities to introduce the new wording.

Have girls think about what parts of the Promise and Law they have been observing when doing any activity e.g. if you have a cooking activity, at the end of the activity ask the girls which parts of the Promise and Law were involved during the activity. It is a great way to remind the girls that we live the Promise and Law everyday no matter what we are doing.

Ages 5-7

Discussion starters

  • Have you heard about the new Guide Promise and Law?
  • What do you think about the new wording of the Promise?
  • The Promise talks about being “true to yourself”. What do you think being true to yourself means?
  • How could we serve our community and Australia?
  • What part of the Law do you think might be easy to keep?
  • The previous wording of the Promise stated that we helped other people; do you think the new wording of the Promise and Law includes this?
  •  Jigsaw relay. Laminate several copies of the Promise, cut into jigsaw pieces, have a relay race to put them together, and then discuss the words of the Promise
  • Fishing game. Have a copy of parts of the Promise and Law written on a Fish template. Each piece should have a paperclip on it. Using a small magnet on a fishing pole, girls fish out the pieces in turn and discuss what is written on the fish.
  • Draw around the shape of your hand. Write down 5 things that you can do to help your community or Australia
  • Girls share about the last time they were grumpy or angry. They should think about why they were grumpy or angry. Is there something they could do to feel better when they get grumpy or angry?
  • Promise Butterfly and Caterpillar.  Using the templates provided photocopy the Promise and Law words onto brightly coloured paper.  Photocopy the Butterfly and Caterpillar.  Cut-out the Promise bubbles (bolded) and place them into the space provided in the wings of the butterfly.  Cut-out the bubbles representing the law and place them onto the Caterpillar.

Ages 7-9

Discussion starters

  • Have you heard about the new Promise and Law?
  • The Promise talks about being “true to yourself” and developing your beliefs. What do you think being true to yourself means?
  • Beliefs are like values. Some values are fairness, cooperation, gratitude, truthfulness. What values are important to you?
  • How could we serve our community and Australia?
  • What part of the Law do you think might be easy to keep? What part of the Law might be harder to keep?
  • The previous wording of the Promise said that we helped other people; do you think the new wording of the Promise and Law includes this?
  • Boomerang promise. Have the girls cut out the boomerang template and stick it onto heavy cardboard. On the boomerang write the Promise with each line on a different point. Have a boomerang throwing competition. Then discuss the 3 parts of the Promise
  • Washing Line relay. Cut out sock shapes from tough paper. Print out the Guide Law – one word or group of words on each sock shape, in really big lettering. Make a complete set of socks for each patrol. Make a washing line. You will need clothes pegs. Review the guide Law with the girls. Then on the word “go” each patrol has a race to peg the Guide Law on their washing line in the right order
  • Give patrols a small bag containing three unrelated objects, e.g., coin, piece of string, safety pin, match, lipstick, flower, chewing gum. Ask them to use at least one item to make up a skit about part of the Promise or Law. The rest guess which part of the Promise or Law they are illustrating
  • Learning the promise. In a circle, pass a ball around the circle with each girl saying the next word of the Promise. Girls might need a copy of the Promise to refer to while they are doing this

Discussion Starters

  • What have you heard about the new Guide Promise and Law?
  • Have a look at the previous wording and the new wording of the Promise, what seems to be missing? Look again at the new wording, are they really missing?
  • What was your favourite part of the previous wording of the Law; is this reflected in the new wording of the Law?
  • Beliefs are like values. Some values are fairness, cooperation, gratitude, truthfulness. What values are important to you?
  • Activity: cut up the previous and current wording of the Promises into phrases – where do the bits of the previous wording of the Promise fit into the new wording; is anything left out? Do the same thing with the previous and current wording of the Law.
  • Provide the girls will newspapers and magazines. Ask them to make a collage of pictures and words that reflect the wording of the Promise and Law. Let the girls discuss why they chose the pictures and words they did.
  • Each patrol is given a different part of the Law. They need to produce a mime or skit of an example of girls living by the part of the Law and not living by the part of the Law. Discuss with the girls about how they might live each part of the Law in their everyday life
  • rue to myself -Who am I: Girls write answers to the following statements on pieces of paper, scrunches them up and throws them into various labelled hoops.

* I love…
* I’m scared of…
* One thing I’d never changed about me…
* Something special about me is…
* Something I am good at is…

Discuss with the girls that they are allowed to be themselves and shouldn’t have to change for anyone.

Ages 14-17

Discussion Starters

  • Have you heard about the new Promise & Law? Where? On what types of Media? Print, TV, Internet, Word of mouth
  • Have people you know approached you about it? What questions have they asked? How did you respond?
  • What are the differences between the old and new wording of the Promise and Law?
  • Discuss how you can apply each part of the Promise to your own life. E.g. How can I be true to myself – give examples at school, at home, with friends, the wider community
  • There was a Promise change around 1969, when the words changed from “On my honour” to “I promise”. How did this change impact the values of the organization? Does the current wording change, change what it means to be a Girl Guide?
  • Film a video clip and send it to GGA for uploading to the GGA YouTube channel that either:
    • creates a new Promise and/or Law song
    • explains the Promise and Law through tableau stills
    • make a fable story that shows girls living by the promise and law
  • What do the girls understand by the phase “develop your belief” How do they display their commitment to their beliefs in your own life. Think about one small way they can show their commitment to their beliefs.
