Australian Adult Leadership Program

The Australian Adult Leadership Program consists of four stages. This is a basic summary:

GUIDING AWARENESS

Introduction to Guiding and its principles.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

General introduction to leadership skills.

Commitment to the Promise.

LEADERSHIP QUALIFICATION

Common core competencies for all Leaders.

Role specific competencies for Leaders working with Youth
OR Leaders working with Adults OR Resource Leaders.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

Modules based on fundamental principles of Guiding and a choice of electives.

Leaders can work towards the Guides Australia Adult Leadership Award. Full details of the requirements of each level are contained in the Leaders Journal.

Areas of Development

The Australian Adult Leadership Program focuses on six areas of development:

  • Fundamental Modules relate to content which is specific to Guiding including the fundamental principles of Guiding, the Australian Guide Program and its implementation and our place in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
  • Program Modules relate to the skills needed to run programs for girls and adults in Units, Districts and Regions.
  • Network Modules relate to accessing resources of all kinds including written materials, people, places and organisations.
  • Outdoor Modules relate to the skills needed to ensure that outdoor activities are an integral part of the program for girls and adults. For your Adult Camping Certificate Leader's self assessment checklist click here. In July 2008, Girl Guides Australia introduced a new outdoor module FDO13 - Manage Risk in Outdoor Activities and updated FDO8 - Conduct an outdoor camp in a bush campsite and FDO12 Conduct Canoeing and Kayaking activities for large and small groups.
  • Training Modules relate to the skills needed to help others to develop leadership skills through their involvement in Guiding.
  • Most Leaders come to Guiding with a wealth of experience. Girl Guides Australia is keen to recognise this and ensure that becoming a Qualified Leader is as straightforward as possible.

You will be appointed a Guiding Partner, who has been trained to ensure that your existing skills are recognised and to assist you to identify areas where you need further training. Your Guiding Partner will answer any questions you may have about the Australian Adult Leadership Program and your own situation.

In 2009, a number of new modules have been added to expand qualified Leaders chose of modules to undertake to extend her knowledge and experience.

Each State has a Training Adviser who can be contacted for information about this program.

    Resources

The Leader Resources page in this section has a searchable database of useful resources for Leaders.

This includes a List of Publications available to assist you (you may need to scroll down).

Information on Guides Activities and Policies can also be found in Guide Lines. Girl Guides Australia has a Code of Conduct for all Leaders to follow.

    Financial Assistance

It is better to give, than to receive

Financial assistance may be available for members travelling to events within Australia and overseas. Not all events will meet the requirements for financial assistance. Donations to funds by units, members or general public are welcome and appreciated (individual donations over $2 are tax deductible), giving the ability to offer more assistance to more members. A number of different funds are available and you can find more information on this page, or from your State International Adviser.

    Wilma Torney Fund

As Wilma Torney was a woman who dedicated her life to Guiding and training within Guiding, her friends and family established a fund to be used to assist in Leader training in Girl Guides Australia. There are three different areas that are covered and available. Download Flyerfor more information.

    Eleanor Manning Fund

Selected training events within the Asia Pacific Region are specified by the Australian Training Committee each year. The Eleanor Manning fund will provide an annual grant to assist one or more Australian Trainers to attend the selected training events. Download Flyerfor more information.

    The Irene Fairbairn Fund

The Irene Fairbairn Fund (IFF) was established in 1955. The IFF aims to help girls and leaders to attend special projects, trainings, camps and conferences in Australia and overseas. Only 95% of the income received in any given year is available the following year, hence donations are always appreciated. The IFF is primarily for members aged between 13 and 35 years, but a 15% provision is allowed for members outside of the suggested age bracket. You can download the IFF brochure and you can download the application form.

    The Gregory Fellowship

In recognition of Mr Reg Gregory, a former Treasurer of the Girl Guides Association of Victoria, a foundation member of the Olave Baden-Powell Society, a Director of the Olave Baden-Powell Society, and a Secretary and Trustee for the Sidney Myer Fund, the Gregory Fellowship was established in 1991 with a donation of $100,000 by the Sidney Myer Fund. The Gregory Fellowship is a ‘PEOPLE’ fund which provides financial assistance for projects which will benefit Guiding, both in Australia and overseas. Download Flyerfor further information.

    Anne Scott Fund

OB-PS members have contributed to the establishment of the Anne Scott fund – named after a former President of OB-PS (Anne is an Australian from Victoria). This fund provides specifically for young women, and is open to application from young women or from WAGGGS Member Organizations who may be carrying out a project with young women. Grants up to a maximum amount of £400 are available.
