Typhoon in Mindanao update
Update from Girl Scouts of the Philippines regarding Typhoon Washi which hit southern Philippines on 16 December 2011.
Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) immediately sent cash donation to our three councils for their relief operations in towns badly hit by the typhoon. The money will be used to buy relief goods such as blankets, towels, sleeping mats, medicines, soap, toothpaste, canned goods, etc. and will be distributed by our girls and adult leaders in evacuation centers. They also help distribute relief goods donated by other concerned groups.
Our council headquarters in Iligan City now serves as temporary shelter for staff and families whose homes had been flooded. There were unconfirmed reports that we have Girl Scout casualties in Iligan. In Cagayan de Oro, our girls and leaders serve chicken porridge to victims that they themselves cooked at the headquarters. They also help in the relief operations of the local government.
Beng Santiago, National Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Philippines said
| My heart goes out to mothers or fathers who wail on tv for losing their children because they were not able to save them from the gushing water and mud. The pain and agony that they are now going through is unimaginable. It is sad Christmas for many of my countrymen In Mindanao. |
Kat Charcos, WAGGGS Asia Pacific Region Development Executive, based in Cagayan de Oro which was also affected by the typhoon said on Monday,
|
We have regained electricity, but there is, as of yet, no running water. Hundreds of people are living in evacuation centers without food and clothing. Most restaurants and fast food chains are closed, and if they are open, are not serving rice (the staple food here) and drinks, because of lack of water. Mineral (bottled) water are fast becoming a scarcity. |
