48TH SCOUT GUIDE REGATTA

Fun, challenges and friendship at the Beach at Snug

More than 1,500 Scouts, Girl Guides, their Leaders and supporters from across Tasmania converged on Snug Beach for the Annual Scout Guide Regatta. The Regatta was officially launched by the Honourable Mr Peter Underwood, Governor of Tasmania.

The opening ceremony included a wonderful Guides and Scouts Own run by Lynne Watson with help from the Gang Show participants. The opening was followed by the sail past with the theme of recycling. Crews were decked out in costumes and gear that reflected and included all manner of recycled items, and ideas.

The Scout Guide Regatta is a great way for Scouts and Guides of all ages to enjoy the outdoors and to try new things. The event is one of the major highlights each year for Scouts and Guides to participate in both water and land based activities. Participants vary from the very experienced to beginners but everyone is encouraged to have a go and to support each other to do their best.

Once the formalities had concluded participants took to the water, the beach and the oval to participate in a myriad of activities. Activities included kayaking, beach races, tug-of-war, swimming and iron-man and women events, pacer racing plus traditional and not-so traditional beach games. The outdoor fun continued into the evening with movies under the stars.

The weather was very kind throughout the Regatta and participants had a great time in and out of the water. It was even kind enough to deliver a night of low cloud on the last night which made packing up the tents easy as there was no dew. The Guides and Scouts participated in all the events, tried new challenges, made new friends and enjoyed the outdoors with smiles on their faces.

Girl Guides Tasmania thanks the Regatta Committee and all Leaders, parents and supporters for making the 48th Scout Guide Regatta such a success.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

By Judy Pointon

Did you participate in Clean Up Australia Day? Perhaps you did with your school or were you seen out and about in your Guide uniform helping clean up Australia during your Guide meeting or did you help out with the rest of the Australia on Clean Up Australia Day? It doesn’t matter when you did it, it’s just great that you did. Did you know that Girl Guides Australia has a partnership with Clean Up Australia and over the last five years, Girl Guides across Australia have participated in increased numbers each year, supporting that partnership?

My Unit, the Colonel Light Gardens Guides in SA, has for the past 12 years cleaned up their local area. Our hall is adjacent to a park, a playground and an oval with a huge hedge, so the girls have lots of opportunity to clean up and support their local community. It is always a surprise to see what the Guides find and there is an informal competition to see who can come back with the most unusual item. This year it was a draw between two bread crates and a cooking drum, both are pretty strange to find in a hedge on the oval! But the overall winning item is from two years ago when the girls found a car seat in the hedge. This still has the title for the most unusual find. If your Guides didn’t participate in Clean Up Australia this year, why not ask your Leaders if you can include it in your program next year?

FROM VICTORIA

MOTHER’S DAY CLASSIC

On 8 May, Girl Guides from Victoria joined many other Victorians at the Mother’s Day Classic in Melbourne. This is a walk or run to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. Last year some of the Canterbury Senior Guides joined in the fun.

Getting up on a Sunday isn’t that bad when you are part of a huge crowd all out for a good time and enjoying a brilliant Autumn day walk around the gardens of Melbourne. We decided that the run was probably a little beyond some of us so we happily walked the 8km. It is an easy way to do something for someone else while having fun. Have you taken part in a local charity walk in your city or town? Next time there is one on, think about encouraging your patrol, Unit and family to take part.

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED

Check out the new Australian Girl Guide website at www.girlguides.org.au It looks fantastic. There is a whole new section about getting involved as well as other information just for girls. There are also links to each of the State websites which have information about events happening in your State.

Another great website to have a look at is the WAGGGS website, www.wagggs.org. WAGGGS is the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and is the organisation that Guides around the world belong to. This is your Association.

The WAGGGS website has information about projects being undertaken around the world by girls just like you. There is information about the Centenary Celebrations, the Millennium Development Goals and a range of badges that you can do by yourself or with your Unit such as the GAT (Global Action Theme) badge or the Climate Change badge.
