Capital Capers – Wow we made it!
31 Guides and two Leaders from across Australia are currently in Hobart, Tasmania participating at Capital Capers. This has taken the form of a week long camp at the Girl Guides Tasmania campsite Orana and is the culmination of these young people’s work on the Centenary Challenge last year.
Saturday, the first full day of camp, was cold and wet but the girls were not deterred and put their shopping skills to the test at Salamanca Market on the waterfront in Hobart. Many bought gloves and beanies to combat the cold while others brought treats, gifts and/or clothes. They then boarded the bus and headed up Mt. Wellington and the girls were delighted when snow started falling on their way up the mountain. While not snowing on the top everything had a light dusting of powdery snow and though very, very cold all got involved in snowball fights or building miniature snow people. Fortunately the sun came out, the clouds cleared and we had great views over the city and back towards our campsite.
Sunday was a sleep in morning then the Great Race was on! This was a wide game organised by a group of local Junior Leaders and involved turning the campsite in a mini world and the race went to five different countries. A highlight of this was watching the girls building and then resuscitating sand dummies on the beach while in Australia! Sunday afternoon saw the girls participate in the pamper parlour and many undertook total pampering having their hair shampooed and put into rags, feet soaked, nails coloured and undergoing a facial cleansing session. The Girl Guides Australia, Chief Commissioner, Helen Geard visited amidst this and congratulated the girls on the work they had done to get to Hobart. They had to raise their own funds to attend the event and organize their own transport.
Other activities during the event will include a trip to Guide House, the Tahune Airwalk with the chance to participate in cable hang gliding, a visit to Zoodoo, Richmond, Port Arthur as well as on site activities and a campfire.
