2010 marks an incredible 20 years since Ian Kiernan AO, founder of Clean Up Australia Day, launched the event around Australia urging people to make a difference by cleaning up their local areas for a couple of hours. Since then, his simple idea has evolved to be Australia's largest community-based environmental event. In 2009 alone, almost 630,000 volunteers participated and 7,000 sites were registered for Clean Up Australia Day.
"We all have an impact on the environment we live in through what we use, reuse, throw away and pick up. So we can all make a difference by thinking of these things every day to benefit our environment and community." Ian Kiernan AO, Founder of Clean Up Australia
Ian also adds; "Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic, fun event where everyone in the local community can come together and pick up rubbish to conserve the environment. Just one piece of rubbish can make a difference and ensure your favourite local beaches and parks stay clean for the future,"

Action on plastic bottle rubbish needed to Clean Up our Climate
Australians bought 118,000 tonnes of plastic drink bottles last year but only recycled 35 per cent of them. The 76,700 tonnes left behind either went to landfill, creating significant greenhouse gas emissions, or ended up in our environment as rubbish.
"Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 1 will be a focus for community action to address not just the growing problem of plastic bottle rubbish but greenhouse gas pollution as well," Ian Kiernan AO, Clean Up Australian Chairman, said.
"Recycling is a simple but effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Mr Kiernan said.
"Every aluminium can that is collected and recycled saves 767 grams of carbon dioxide, which is the equivalent of 1 wheelie bin of greenhouse gas emissions.
"Climate change is the greatest challenge facing our and future generations. I encourage everyone to take action by registering a Clean Up Day site. Let's start today to save tomorrow."
